“A new art trail paves its way through the forest, leading visitors along magically lit paths and tracks. Along the way, visitors can expect to see large-scale and breathtaking light and sound installations, all of which enter into a relationship with the nature and architecture of the Hoge Rielen. Uit Het Donker is part of the annual WinterWarm festival and promises an unforgettable experience that will linger on visitors’ minds for a long time.

Artist Gabey Tjon a Tham’s installation, ‘The Monads,’ is inspired by the sound of the wind rustling through the foliage of trees, and Philip Vermeulen’s rousing elastic light installation, ‘Slue,’ twists and turns its way through the forest. Anne van de Star’s ‘Bling Rrring’ creates a reverberating dialogue between two steel rings that orbit each other meditatively. WIThWIT plays a game with shadow images based on a colorfully constructed city, while Anouk Kruithof’s video installation ‘Universal Tongue’ invites visitors to dance along to different dance styles found around the globe.”

“Etymologically, Slue means ‘to turn or slide violently or uncontrollably.’ Multiple elastic cables are stretched across a sizeable space, painting the air with ‘whooshing’ sounds and streaks of colored light. Simultaneously beautiful and elusive, this performative installation can be seen as the amped-up version of Vermeulen’s 10 Meters of Sound.

Slue is a study into the materiality of light and of the chaotic patterns arising in interactions between whipping elastic bands and varying frequencies of light, as well as of the effect that this interference has on the viewers’ perception in combination with the architectural or natural surroundings.

Slue is made in collaboration with Mischa Daams. It premiered at Into the Great Wide Open festival on Vlieland island in 2018, where it was stretched amongst trees in the woods.
