What do we talk about when we talk about generations?

Gen-z, Millennials, boomers, are such widespread classifications aiming to explain the spirit of the times. What do people share that includes them in a specific generation? Looking through the lens of shared experiences, specific historicities, class dimensions, geopolitical and cultural contexts, we can shine a light on the common grounds of different generations.

We shall follow this rotation of generations through musical practices, looking at how previous generations of musicians stood for chaos in their practice, completely breaking with the long-standing traditions of the musical establishment. How, after this break has become mainstream and institutionalized, new generations of creators are seeking reconnections with their ancestry, shared family and community histories and how, especially in today’s allegedly globalized society, musicians from younger generations are trying to discover their own individual and shared identities.

Generations choose their own identity, their own stance in front of what is already set out for them. It is worthwhile questioning, then: How does a generation define itself?
