14:00 – 17:00 – workshop
18:00 – Nightwalk

Facilitator: Stephanie Castonguay (iii artist in residence)
Language: English

During this workshop, participants will build an optical sound device which they can take home with them. By means of an amplified solar panel, the instrument enables the transformation of light into the audible realm.

The workshop will introduce participants to the basics of electronic soldering and circuit-making using home-made chemistry. Along with a hands-on approach to electronics, the workshop will also present the concept of transduction of energy from the visible realm to the audible domain.

In the second part, we’ll explore these listening devices during an organized night walk. This will involve listening to the rhythmic pulsations emanating from various light sources, and to render them in their physical environment, in order to reveal a new, sensitive dimension of the urban landscape as we wander.

Participant Requirements:
This is a beginner / intermediate soldering project. It will help if you have had experience soldering a circuit together before but it is not mandatory.

Participants are also invited to bring: headphones, various luminous objects (bicycle flashers, light-emitting toys, etc.).
During the walk, small speakers will be provided.

Provided by iii:
Soldering kits
9v batteries

Schedule:

14:00 – 17:00 – Workshop
Part 1: Introduction
Introduction to how this circuit works, soldering 101, demo DIY circuit-making.

Part 2: Soldering the circuit.

18:00 – Nightwalk (Location TBD)
Part 3: Listening session (individual – group) suggestions, awareness and discovery.

About Stephanie Castonguay
Fueled by an insatiable curiosity for experimentation, Stephanie’s artistic journey explores sound matter through installation, performance, experimental electronic instrument making and composition. Rooted in materiality and process, she transforms discarded machines into vessels of resonance, glitches and latent sonorities. By translating the nuances of the sensory world, her work seeks to unveil the hidden facets of our subtle environment, bridging the realms of perception and the imperceptible.
