“Exploring the Unseen Past: Netherlands and Taiwan” is dedicated to unveiling the hidden history of the 17th century and delving into the intricate relationship between history, art, and technology. At the heart of this event is the “Double Echo of Time” project, which aims to reshape historical narratives and resurrect forgotten cultural legacies.
Featuring two remarkable projects, “Holding the Wind in your Hands” and “The Absurdity of Certainty,” as well as an Artist-in-Residency Exchange Presentation by Chen, Yu-Jung, the event will take attendees on a multidisciplinary journey through time. Following this, Bo-Chiao Wang’s presentation, “Zeelandia 400,” will unearth unique perspectives within historical archives, exploring the enduring Dutch Taiwanese connection and its impact on contemporary communities.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore the untold stories of history and the transformative power of art and technology. In this event, a special snack based on a 17th century Dutch recipe will be served.

Chen, Yu-Jung’s project is a captivating journey through time, inviting us to explore Formosa’s history during the Dutch East India Company’s 39-year rule, which unfolded four centuries ago. Using state-of-the-art technologies Chen aims to redefine historical segments and reconstruct the landscapes of that bygone era while envisioning their future. Fort Provintia and Fort Zeelandia, iconic structures of the past, are deconstructed into abstract spatial lines and reborn through AI algorithms as digital interpretations of Tainan’s rich heritage. This digital realm transcends the realms of reality and imagination, sparking a dialogue between historical architecture and AI-calculated spaces. Chen will share his latest research of this project during the event.
Project Unveiling 2
Bo-Chiao will share unique perspectives and discoveries in the realm of historical archeology
archives and cultural heritage. “Zeelandia 400” is a research and exhibition project that tells the story of the Dutch Fortress “Zeelandia” built in Taiwan in the year 1624, highlighting the longstanding Dutch-Taiwanese connection. This story is illustrated by unique historical documents and archaeological materials brought into an immersive dialogue with each other. Even though the Dutch VOC rule of Taiwan
was modest in scope and time, the “Dutch Formosa” rule initiated four centuries of Taiwanese
colonial history. This pivotal moment in history, therefore, affects the livelihoods and identities of
Taiwanese communities until this very day.
Beyond a historical exploration of the Dutch-Taiwanese connection, the quadricentennial commemorative exhibition and its associated activities, thus, facilitate meaningful ways of discussing the present and future.
