Mihalis Shammas’ new musical instrument will be at Mihalis Shammas at SLOW(36h) Festival in Bruges. The Pendulum Instrument is a 4-meter tall electromagnetic string instrument. It stretches throughout the entire height of a room, suspended from the ceiling.

“During the fourth edition of the arts festival of slowness, we give you 36 hours to pause and reflect, in a society that is all too often rushing forward. Inspired by ancient and other cultures, you then start to regard time as ‘costly’ and get maximal enjoyment from minimal resources.”

Mariska de Groot will be showing BROM. An old spinning choral humming top that De Groot once found on a flea market was the start for the immersive installation. It resulted in a choir of motorized spinning tops, hanging from the ceiling. Every instrument is tuned differently, when walking among them different harmonies and rhythms can be heard.

The Pendulum Instrument is a project conceived and developed by Mihalis Shammas. Co-produced by STUK (Leuven, BE) and Concertgebouw Brugge (BE), with the support of Stimuleringsfonds (NL) and FPK (NL).

BROM is commissioned by OYFO Kunst & Techniek, Hengelo (NL) with financial support of Mondriaanfonds. Production and advice: Bram Vreven.
