Mariska de Groot will show BROM at Hear Here by STUK Leuven. Hear Here takes you on a walking tour of sound art in Leuven. Fifteen artworks about sound or silence reverberate through Leuven’s historical heritage sites. On the occasion of KU Leuven’s 600th anniversary, this edition focuses on historical university buildings. With a map in hand, you shall walk from a medieval watergate, past an empty school, to an imposing baroque chapel. At each site, a sound installation enters into dialogue with acoustics and architecture. Historic works by great sound-art pioneers are featured alongside new installations by Belgian artists. So put on your walking shoes and experience Leuven’s heritage with new ears and eyes.
An old spinning choral humming top that De Groot once found on a flea market was the start for the immersive installation BROM. Fascinated by the colourful children’s toy making a 3 chord melody she researched its patented technique, the history of the top and the free-reed instrument. It resulted in a choir of motorized spinning tops, hanging from the ceiling. Every instrument is tuned differently, when walking among them different harmonies and rhythms can be heard.
