Sky Kung is a Hong Kong-based media artist, music producer, and instrument maker. His work explores the intersection of technology and creativity, empowering artists to shape their own tools while blending technical precision with artistic intuition.
Through self-built electronic instruments and creative coding, Sky investigates the connection between sound and visual art. His recent project, Osc Twins, is an open-source instrument designed for live audio-visual performances using obsolete displays like CRT oscilloscopes.
In his solo project the black sea, Sky experiments with ambient music, tape loops, and drone soundscapes, performing with modified cassette players, custom software synthesizers, and electroacoustic devices. As a guitarist in the band Lucid Express, he creates dreamlike textures with effect pedals while also designing his own, combining digital signal processing and analog circuitry.
“During the residency, I will further develop my previous work, Osc Twins, and integrate it into an audio visual performance. By incorporating another obsolete display, such as a VGA LCD monitor. I will expand the interplay between sound and visual elements through new experiments.“
“Additionally, I will develop a DIY sound instrument expansion toolkit, an open-source electronic system that transforms found objects (e.g., cabinet lighting strips, discarded metal enclosure) into playable electroacoustic instruments. These prototypes will also serve as additional inputs for both sound and visuals in the performance.“
“These interconnected works explore how open-source resources empower artists to develop their own tools, reconnecting with the creative potential of their instruments.”
This residency and work are supported by Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) and iii.
