Historically, social challenges and crises have always sparked new impulses in design. From the Arts and Crafts movement to the Bauhaus and ecological design in the 1970s, design has always been a response to social, economic, and ecological upheavals.

How is design changing in Europe today, in the face of local and global crises? What strategies define a crisis-resilient European design landscape? What role do tradition, innovation, collaboration, and the artistic play in this? What is Europe’s strength compared to other regions?

EUNIC Berlin is presenting a Lab Talk at the Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory during this year’s Berlin Design Week. A selection of young European designers will address these questions. While they are rooted in the traditional design fields of their respective countries and can thus draw on long-standing expertise and existing industrial or craft structures, they also seek progressive and creative solutions to current challenges with an innovative outlook.
