How do we perceive time and space? And how will it change in the future? How did technological advancements of the past challenge this? These are questions that ‘Evidence in Motion: Fragile Continuums’ aim to ask showing the process of Zeno van den Broek and Zalán Szakács. Together they meet offering a first glimpse into their latest work within the setting of an immersive conversation between the works and their makers that transits the boundaries of time.
Within technological developments, we are under constant pressure to adjust to a world in which a fragile continuum between time and space is constantly challenged. Zeno van den Broek and Zalán Szakács explore these tension fields, one through exploring how the future might be and one through travelling back in time and uncovering forgotten technologies. ‘Evidence in Motion: Fragile Continuums’ seeks to bring the two works together to create an equilibrium in which the intricate lens-making and optical illusions of the 17th century collide with the latest advancement of artificially generated digital spaces. The experimental performance will be followed by an artist talk with accompanying Q&A in which Zeno van den Broek and Zalán Szakács will give further insight into their research and practice.
Zeno van den Broek
Zeno van den Broek is a Dutch composer and artist whose works investigate and unsettle the relationships between people and fabricated surroundings. He utilises audiovisual means to create site- and concept-specific works which interrogate conventional conceptions of our experience of space. These works create visceral experiences that force new perspectives on the spaces they occupy or represent, whether these spaces are physical or digital. Van den Broek aims to create moments of disruption, friction and possibility that activate our sense of agency and jolt us out of our habitual consumption of space towards exploration and direct experience. These moments of agency allow visitors to become active participants of van den Broek’s work and, in important ways, complete it.
Zalán Szakács
Zalán Szakács is an artist who brings together immersive art, scenography and media theory
research. Through his work, Szakács explores the relationship between space, body and technology, resulting in multi-sensory experiences that include elements such as light, sound, smell, time, tactility and movement.
Szakács’ art installations invite the viewer on a mystical journey where reality and fiction
intertwine. Attuned to both the individual and collective experience, it evokes a deeper
awareness of the body in space and can transport the viewer to another place and time.
The studio of Zalán Szakács is based in Rotterdam, where he graduated at Piet Zwart Institute in 2019 and at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2017.
Additionally, he has been exhibiting at Ars Electronica Festival (AUT), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (NL), Het Nieuwe Instituut (NL), V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media (NL), Kunsthaus Graz (AUT), MU Hybrid Art House (NL), and Light Art Museum Budapest (HU) among other places. Szakács is a visiting teacher at Utrecht University of Arts and affiliated researcher at Utrecht University.
