Featuring new work by composer-in-residence at Festival Dag in de Branding Myrto Nizami and iii workspace member; sound artist Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn. Meet the next generation of interdisciplinary makers!

Festival Dag in de Branding in The Hague offers an introduction to the latest in contemporary music. Three times a year, the city’s leading music venues, the Residentie Orkest and various ensembles organise this festival full of discoveries at different locations across the city.

On March 22 at 16:30, iii hosts a concert as part of the 72nd Festival Dag in de Branding. “Interdisciplinary” defines the afternoon, as composer-in-residence Myrto Nizami presents her latest music theatre project with singer Kristia Michael and Ensemble Modelo62, exploring composition, improvisation, spatial sound, performer-audience proximity, and visual dramaturgy. iii workspace member Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn debuts a new work for his self-developed hybrid instrument, the chimeracord.

Myrto Nizami (Greece, 1994) is a composer and pianist exploring masks, changing identities, layering, and (de-)construction. As composer-in-residence at Festival Dag in de Branding (2023-2025), she develops a music theatre work inspired by Fernando Pessoa’s Sonnet VIII, examining personas, the question of what is real, and peeling compositionally

Myrto Nizami presents a new work for four musicians, singer, electronics, and video. She explores various aspects of music theatre, including the balance between composition and improvisation, the spatial distribution of sound, the distance between performers and audience, and the contribution of visuals to musical dramaturgy.

Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn is a performer, sound artist, and scholar working around the edges of installation, improvisation, composition, and craft. He performs concerts and builds installations showcasing a variety of hybrid acoustic instruments of his own design and construction.

Kevin Toksöz Fairbairn will debut a new composition for his self-developed hybrid musical instrument; the chimeracord. This mutant monochord refracts its single string through an innovative brass resonating chamber that also superposes reed, brass, percussive elements in innovative polyphony. Designed for a single performer, the chimeracord seamlessly braids a multitude of disparate acoustic families into a unitary hybrid body.
