Interactive technologies can bring new and fascinating dimensions to artistic practices. Over the past decades, these technologies have also become more affordable and accessible.

In this workshop we will focus on how to design and create engaging interactions for performers or audience members using these technologies. We will move from discussing concepts to implementing them.

During the workshop, we will go in depth on how to design the flow of interaction and structure the connections between your input and output data, discuss and try out useful algorithms to process the data from your sensor interface or controller, and how to document your design. At the end of the workshop, we will open the doors to the audience to present the outcomes of the workshop.

The workshop is based on the book “Composing Interactions – an Artist’s Guide to Building Expressive Interactive Systems” authored by the workshop leader, Marije Baalman.

Participation Requirements to join this workshop, we ask you to bring the following:

  • – a project you are working on
  • – the sensor interface or (MIDI) controller that you are planning to use in you project
  • – your laptop with preferred environment for interactive design (eg. SuperCollider, Max/MSP, Touch Designer, Processing, PureData…)

You should feel comfortable programming in the environment, and you should have already have figured out how to receive the data from your sensor interface or controller in that environment.

When signing up, participants should indicate the following:

  • – a short description of the project you are working on
  • – what will you bring to the workshop?
  • – what environment(s) do you use?
  • – what do you want to learn in the workshop?
