The Sentinel Self is an interactive and immersive artwork-simulation built in the game engine Unity. A project by artist Sissel Marie Tonn, currently in development as part of the EU S+T+Arts | Repairing the present residency programme. The work will premier at the exhibition :REWORLD at MEET in Milan opening on October 4th 2022.

The work is inspired by the dynamics of human cells interacting and co-evolving with microbes and external agents such as microplastics, and creates an immersive world based upon an ongoing simulation developed together with experts in microbial metagenomics and immunology, together with a core team of artists including George Simms, Zuza Banasińska and Sam Bilbow. Jonathan Chaim Reus composed the music for the piece using an ensemble of artificial, human-inspired singing voices.

The Sentinel Self will premier at the exhibition :REWORLD, which addresses world-building as a core activity in advanced digital culture. As we move in and out of metaverses under construction, mixed realities (XR) reveal an unparalleled potential to provide critical visualisations of ecosystems outside our bodies and also to map out the emotional and nervous entanglements inside of them. Likewise, :REWORLD examines the urgency of re-materialization.

:REWORLD opens at MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan, an organisation focused on reducing the digital cultural divide and guaranteeing an increasingly active and inclusive participatio
