The history of voice technologies such as the vocoder and autotune tells us that what is creatively interesting is usually how they are “misused”. However, the current wave of voice AI technologies are dependent on easily exploited vocal labor by artists, asking us to reconsider the notion of “creative misuse” as it expands into a broader ecosystem of voices and datasets.

In this online workshop, as part of the Goethe Institut Portugal’s Art Meets Tech series, Jonathan Reus will present a new open, hackable, and playful voice synthesis instrument called Tungnaá, developed in collaboration with the Intelligent Instruments Lab in Reykjavik as part of his work D̴̼̥̉a̸͂͜ͅd̵͂͑ͅą̶̀͐s̵̯̈́e̶̜͔̍͝t̶̘͎̃s̶̫͙͂ . Part of the workshop will also be dedicated to discussion around the cultural, economic and ethical significance of creative misuse in music that depends on voice/data.
