Tijs Ham is a musician and sound artist with a background in visual arts and  is the co-founder of the ‘Soundlings Collective’ and has worked for the STEIM foundation as an artist, organizer as well as a member of their artistic board. In his artworks he applies programming, live-electronics techniques and system design to explore and expand the possibilities of audible expression. Inspired by artificial intelligence, chaos, evolutionary processes and machine learning he incorporates similar approaches in order to create dynamic structures and experiment with their aesthetic results.

Tijs Ham is currently a PhD candidate for Artistic Research at the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway. Tijs Ham’s artistic research is situated in the field of live electronic music and encompasses instrument design, composition, structured improvisation, and audio-visual performance.

“My main research question involves the artistic use of chaotic processes and the implications of instability and unpredictability on all of the disciplines that my practice touches upon. The research is slowly building towards a long duration concert involving various live electronic setups and collaborations with musicians within an audio-visual framework. “

During his residency at iii, Tijs Ham will continue his artistic research on chaotic systems and turbulence by focussing on connections between sonic and physical turbulences.

“ The unpredictable nature of my instruments troubles ideas around control, or rather, influence, and non-, or rather, post-humanistic views on agency. Although my performances clearly have an expressive aspect, it can be difficult to pinpoint where exactly this expression originates. One could point to the performer, or the instrument itself but there is perhaps a more important sense of an agency of the listener. “

Tijs Ham’s residency will take place at iii workspace from April 12 to May 7 2022. He will present the outcome of his research during his residency on May 7.

Tijs Ham’s residency is funded by his PhD program in the faculty of Art, Music and Design (KMD) at the University of Bergen (UiB).

iii’s residency program is made possible through the support of Creative Industries Fund NL and the Creative Europe program of the European Union.
