FAQ

At iii we have a plurality of ethnic backgrounds and we don’t police phonetics. English is the language we communicate with the most within the organisation, so we commonly use the pronunciation for “i” as in the English first person pronoun. Three of them because multiple individuals make a collective. This sound repeated three times also becomes similar to the Spanish “ay ay ay!” (surprise) or the Chinese “爱 爱 爱” (love love love). Since we are based in The Netherlands we also use the sound of the Dutch “i” which sounds like the English “e”, resulting in the sound “eee” (feel free to find your own meaning). Some people say “triple i” which suggests the third eye of higher consciousness, that’s nice. But please don’t capitalise our name! As good perfectionists, we always dot all the “i”s. We don’t want to be confused with the roman numeral “III” for “3” or “third”. Artists, scientists and inventors after all always want to be first.

The acronym stands forInstrument inventors initiative”. We are a self-managed association (initiative), and we develop the technical means (instrument inventors) that we use within our own autonomous art practices.

We are interested in creating interdisciplinary artworks that engage with science, technology, performance and perception. Our focus is not to make guitars, violins, midi controllers, software effect plugins etc, so we will not support proposals for projects where a new musical instrument, interface or piece of software is the end product.

We also are an organisation with a DIY attitude, we believe that artists need to develop their own craft in order to possess the technical capacity to realise their own ideas, so we don’t provide technical staff for realising your artworks. But you can during a residency of course use part of the production budget to hire someone to provide advice, feedback and assistance, so that you can further develop your own technical skills. And we can help you find a suitable person to hire depending on your needs.

While we are not primarily a presentation space, we do regularly host workshops and events in our own studio, which is called iii workspace. Here you can find more information on our hosted program. Come and visit!

Yes, we believe that collaboration is central to develop the new field of Art, Science and Technology. Through our agency we connect artists to partners that can support the research, development and presentation of new and adventurous artistic visions. Hereyou can find more about the agency and our circulation program. Let’s work together!

You are always welcome to get in touch but unfortunately we don’t have the capacity to respond (nor host) most proposals for concerts from touring musicians.

Great, we love to meet like minded artists! Here you can find more information on how to connect to our hosted program curators.

Please check our workshop page first to see if your workshop would be a good fit. You can then email the workshop coordinator, Yun at yun@instrumentinventors.org with your proposal. Please keep in mind that it might take some time to get back to you.

For workshops: you can cancel your ticket anytime, but you can only get a refund if you cancel 2 weeks in advance OR if we can find a replacement participant.

We price workshops as low as possible according to how much we pay the facilitators and how much the materials involved cost.
Some of our workshops have discounts but we are not able to arrange them for all workshops. We usually show these discounts in the shop. Sometimes they require emailing the workshop coordinator yun@instrumentinventors.org.
