ABOUT THE VIDEO FORMAT:

If you choose to submit a video as opposed to a written application:

Please create a video of up to 5 minutes in which you explain your project and how you would realise it during your development residency. Please make sure to cover all content requirements and note that you may not submit any additional written materials, besides the video and your budget. Selections will be made solely on the basis of the videos. Upload your video to a service such as YouTube or Vimeo.

Additionally please make sure that the recording is done in a calm environment and with a steady camera angle without disruption.

Development Residencies

Development residencies provide artists with the opportunity to continue or start a project. This can involve material research, composing, technical development and similar processes. We ask that artists consider how their project will engage creatively with technology and how it will be experienced by an audience.

Development residencies have a duration of 1 month and result in a public presentation at iii workspace.

There’s the possibility of distributing the project through our agency if the residency outcomes are sufficiently developed.

Selection

Proposals are selected by the members assembly of iii, iii hosted program curators, iii agency team and iii workspace members. In the case of exchange residencies proposals are also selected with program partners.

Selection criteria:

  • – relevance to the artistic focus of iii, its program themes and compatibility with iii’s organisational culture;
  • – originality of the proposal;
  • – quality of the artist’s portfolio, relevance and feasibility of the project in relation to their previous work;
  • – contribution towards a diverse and engaging overall iii program.

We invite 6 residents per year. In the overall selection of participants, iii strives to maintain a varied composition in terms of gender, age, career level, place of origin and residence, cultural background, education and artistic focus.

Facilities

Residents have access to iii’s 500 m2 shared workspaces which includes a 200m2 project space for large scale project development and presentation, wood, metal and electronics workshops, a sound-isolated sound studio as well as a coworking room and an office/meeting room. These facilities are shared between 17 workspace members and 1-3 rotating guest residents.

Scheduling

Residencies are scheduled in one of two periods; Spring (March – May) and Autumn (September – November), when the artistic climate of The Hague is at its liveliest.

The schedule is made by iii in consultation with residents and iii program partners, in order to curate a program that fosters exchange between artists and generates engagement with the public.

We ask residents for a stated preference for a residency period (within the aforementioned time frames), but we also ask for a reasonable degree of flexibility to make it possible for iii to curate the program and to connect residents with peers and audience.

Typically we plan residencies between 6 to 18 months in advance.

Travel and Accommodation

International residents will be provided with accommodation in guest studio apartments (at an external facility, separate from iii workspace) and a bike for the duration of their stay. International residents also receive a travel budget. For residents based in The Netherlands coverage of travel and accommodation costs can be discussed based on need.

  • – Research residencies are granted a material expenses budget up to €1200.
  • – Travel costs (international residents) will be reimbursed up to €800.
  • – Artist fees will be provided for presentations organised by iii in conjunction to the residencies, excluding the first presentation, in line with fair practice guidelines.

  • – Residents are required to give a minimum of 1 public presentation (eg. a workshop, performance or presentation) within iii’s program during the residency.
