About iii
iii (instrument inventors initiative) is an artist-run, community platform supporting research and creation, linking performance, technology and the human senses. Arising from the ArtScience tradition of The Hague, iii strives to balance technological innovation, theoretical reflection and human experience. iii contributes to international developments in the field of Art, Science, Technology, functioning both as a cultural incubator focussing on talent development, and as a public-oriented organisation connecting creators to a broad audience via a (inter)national partner network.
The members of the supervisory board:
- – Are not direct stakeholders of the association;
- – Have a broad orientation on society and a network that is relevant for the association;
- – Are sufficiently in the know about working in the public domain, specifically with regard to handling subsidies;
- – Underwrite the Governance Code Culture;
- – Have insights into the requirements to the organisation to achieve quality, efficacy and continuity, as well as legal requirements;
- – Have an affinity with the field of Art, Science & Technology.
For the new composition of the supervisory board we are looking for:
- – A composition that reflects the diversity of the community and activities of iii.
- – Diversity in artistic expertise on a high level: we work interdisciplinary and want to see different disciplines represented in our supervisory board.
We are looking for two to four members with – besides artistic expertise or affinity – specific expertise in the following fields:
- – Education, and/or
- – Exchange & collaboration with the private sector, and/or
- – Professionalisation of a growing organisation, and/or
- – Appealing to and reaching into various (international) communities in The Hague outside of the cultural sector.
Required effort
The supervisory board meets two to four times per year, and as often as is required considering specific circumstances or matters of concern.
Remuneration
The supervisory board does not receive remuneration for the work. A reimbursement for travel costs to attend the meetings is provided.
Short history of the organisation and recent developments
Founded in 2013, the organisation now structurally includes 47 creatives with a diverse range of backgrounds, ranging from internationally established professionals, to fresh graduates which have distinguished themselves during their studies.
With the introduction of the structural funding for the period 2021-24, the organisational team has grown and professionalised substantially in order to support the growth of the program both in quality and quantity.
This decentralised model makes it possible for iii to support a large volume of activities with a comparatively low overhead. It offers creatives a peer community and shared resources, enabling talent and projects to grow and flourish. Since 2021, yearly about 150 artists and creatives are involved on a project basis in the program of iii.
The organisation is continuously developing and evaluating the different ways in which creatives can get involved in the program, with the goal of enabling the needs of iii’s extended community. Each year over 150 creatives are involved on a project basis in the program of iii.

In 2025-28 we want to further develop and professionalise and expand our activities. For this we have applied for subsidies to our main funders for the period 2025-28.
Governance model
As an association, iii has a different structure than most cultural organisations, and therefore has a different Governance model: there are checks on the (executive) Board both from the members of the association, as the Supervisory Board. The artistic direction is given by the members of iii, that also appoint the (executive) Board and the Supervisory Board. The (executive) board ensures that the activities are realised, and gives input to the team (lead by a Managing Director) that produces the activities. The Supervisory Board advises the (executive) Board and gives feedback on the general direction of the organisation, its operations and on large subsidy applications and budgets, and the annual report. The General Assembly of members supervises the artistic concept creation and execution of the program, chooses the artists in residence and commissions for new works, checks the annual reports, and assigns the overall budgets. The annual report is also checked by an external accountant.
The Supervisory Board meets at least two times per year together with the (executive) Board and the Managing Director, and if necessary more often.
As we are an association of artists with diverse backgrounds, we mostly use English as language in the organisation. The annual financial report and explanatory notes are made in Dutch.

Over iii
iii (instrument inventors initiative) is een community-platform door en voor kunstenaars dat nieuwe interdisciplinaire artistieke praktijken ondersteunt die performance, technologie en de zintuigen verbinden. Ontstaan uit de Haagse ArtScience-traditie, streeft iii naar een balans tussen technologische innovatie, theoretische reflectie en menselijke ervaring. iii inspireert en stimuleert internationale ontwikkelingen op het gebied van Art, Science & Technology. iii is zowel een culturele broedplaats waar talent de ruimte en steun krijgt om zich te ontplooien, als een publieksgerichte organisatie die makers via een (inter)nationaal partnernetwerk in contact brengt met een breed publiek.
De leden van de Raad van Toezicht:
- – zijn geen directe belanghebbende van de vereniging;
- – beschikken over een brede maatschappelijke oriëntatie en een netwerk dat relevant is voor de vereniging;
- – zijn voldoende bekend met het werken in het publieke domein, in het bijzonder in de omgang met subsidies;
- – onderschrijven de Governance Code Cultuur;
- – hebben inzicht in de eisen die vanuit het oogpunt van kwaliteit, doel- en rechtmatigheid en continuïteit aan de organisatie worden gesteld;
- – hebben affiniteit met het veld van Art, Science & Technology.
Voor de nieuwe samenstelling van de Raad van Toezicht zijn we op zoek naar:
- – Een samenstelling waarin de diversiteit van de community en activiteiten van iii worden gerepresenteerd.
- – Diversiteit in artistieke expertise op een hoog niveau: we werken interdisciplinair en willen verschillende disciplines vertegenwoordigd zien in onze Raad van Toezicht.
We zijn op zoek naar twee tot vier nieuwe leden met – naast artistieke expertise of affiniteit – specifieke expertise op de volgende vlakken:
- – Educatie, en/of
- – Uitwisseling & samenwerking met de private sector en/of
- – Professionalisering van een groeiende organisatie, en/of
- – Het aanspreken en bereiken van verschillende (internationale) gemeenschappen in Den Haag buiten de culturele sector.
Inzet
De Raad van Toezicht vergadert twee tot vier keer per jaar, en zo vaak als noodzakelijk is als gevolg van specifieke omstandigheden of aanleidingen.
Vergoeding
De Raad van Toezicht ontvangt geen beloning voor de werkzaamheden. Reiskostenvergoeding voor het bijwonen van vergaderingen wordt wel gegeven.
Korte geschiedenis van de organisatie en recente ontwikkelingen
iii werd opgericht in 2013 en bestaat nu als organisatie structureel uit 47 creatieven met uiteenlopende achtergronden, van internationaal gevestigde professionals tot pas-afgestudeerden die zich tijdens hun studie hebben onderscheiden.
Met de toekenning van de structurele subsidies voor de periode 2021-2024, zijn de organisatie en ons programma in zowel kwalitatieve als kwantitatieve zin gegroeid en geprofessionaliseerd. Met haar decentrale model kan iii een groot aantal activiteiten met relatief beperkte overheadkosten ondersteunen. Op deze manier bieden we kunstenaars middelen en een community van peers en laten we talent en projecten tot bloei komen. Sinds 2021 betrekt iii jaarlijks 100 tot 150 kunstenaars en creatieven op projectbasis in het programma.

In 2025-28 willen we onze organisatie verder blijven ontwikkelen en professionaliseren en activiteiten verder uitbreiden. Hiervoor hebben we opnieuw bij onze hoofdfinanciers subsidieaanvragen lopen voor de periode 2025-28.
Governance model
iii kent als vereniging een andere structuur dan de meeste culturele instellingen, en heeft daarmee een ander Governance-model: er is toezicht op het bestuur door zowel de leden van de vereniging als de Raad van Toezicht. De artistieke richting wordt aangegeven door de leden van iii, die ook het Bestuur en de Raad van Toezicht aanstellen. Het bestuur ziet toe op de realisatie van de activiteiten, en geeft input aan het team (onder leiding van de Managing Director) dat de activiteiten realiseert. De Raad van Toezicht geeft het Bestuur advies en feedback op de algemene richting van de organisatie, de gang van zaken, op grote subsidieaanvragen en budgetten, en op het jaarverslag en jaarrekening. De Algemene Ledenvergadering ziet toe op de artistiek-inhoudelijke conceptvorming en uitvoering van het programma, kiest de gastresidenten en opdrachten voor nieuwe werken, controleert de jaarrapportages (verslag en jaarrekening), en de toewijzing van budgetten in grote lijnen. Daarnaast wordt de jaarrekening jaarlijks gecontroleerd door een externe accountant.
De Raad van Toezicht komt minstens twee keer per jaar bij elkaar met het Bestuur en de Managing Director, en indien nodig vaker.
Aangezien we een vereniging zijn van kunstenaars met een diverse achtergrond, wordt als voertaal in de organisatie Engels gehanteerd. De jaarrekening en toelichting daarop wordt wel in het Nederlands opgesteld.
