Jury Report

“The jury was deeply impressed by Tingyi Jiang’s performance ‘Make It Fit’ in which she combines choreography, stage design and pop-propaganda. In this performance she demonstrates her ability of treating a social subject with humour – and does not shy away from playful self-criticism and parody. The jury was charmed by her excellent use of text, timing and teamwork. In her work, Jiang brings together political urgencies, institutional critique and identity politics in a powerful and personal way.

We see great potential in Tingyi Jiang and are curious about her artistic development and her research into the edges of performance.”

About Tingyi Jiang
Tingyi Jiang is an interdisciplinary artist based in The Hague, currently studying at the ArtScience Interfaculty at the Royal Academy of Art and Conservatory The Hague.

Tingyi is interested in the idea of performance as a means of engaging with the world. The entry point of her research is that ‘performance’ is a phenomenon in our social life. She delves into how these phenomenons relates to our societal system and how it influences our everyday behaviors. ’Situations’ and ‘Actions’ serve as the primary materials for her work. By repetition, reconfiguration and reconstruction them to construct a new theatrical and fictional situations. Usually, the audience’s interaction with and response to these contexts become an integral part of the ‘performance’. More than site-specific, her work is more akin to an ‘intervention’ woven into specific social settings. It’s a blend of reality and fiction. Within this framework, She explores the identity, memory,  performativity of language, and the relationship between individual and authority.
