Sound artist Rachwill Breidel (26) decided to turn his disappointment in Dutch night life into a spiritual club event… “we are taken over by music.”

“Not all visitors are aware of it, but during the evening they are part of a Winti ritual”, tells Surinamese-Dutch Rachwill Breidel (26). He is the mastermind behind Ogri Meti, a new, recurring club night in The Hague. Both the music and the decoration of the room are inspired by Surinamese Winti religion that arose through the merging of multiple West African God concepts, which in colonial time were brought by enslaved Africans to plantations in Suriname.

“The idea for the club night arose from an absence”, tells Breidel, who himself is a sound artist and musician. Over the past 10 years, he became disappointed by the Dutch club scene, which he describes as “not very surprising”. “Often monotonous techno is being played. In my opinion a connection between the public and the musicians is lacking, as is a connection between the public and their physical environment. This is something that gets little attention, while this can help to experience a night on a deeper level.”
