Encoding the Apocalypse features works by The Twin Stranger and Lazarus Chan who are presenting the outcome of their residencies at iii. Using data visualisation and performance they explore the theme of apocalypse as a force of nature and as an aspect of human nature.
More information about the works:
The Twin Stranger:
‘Mefite Goddess of the Volcano’ is an original, new site based theatre piece on the theme of volcanology and volcano lore by The Twin Stranger, Jude Cowan Montague and Riitta Hakkarainen. The piece incorporates multiple live coders working with various data streams, such as seismic data, ground deformation, earthquakes and volcanic emissions. The live coders will weave these expressions and audio-visual transformations of data into a narrative inspired by mythology, oral histories, and the recollections of those who have experienced the effects of volcanic eruption.
The production will be presented as an immersive experience or promenade theatre and distant audiences will be able to access a video documentary and live streams of the event. The theatershow will be accompanied by a live coded performance by Rafaele M. Andrade and eerieear.
Mefite is the volcano goddess of pre-Roman Italy and was one of the gods of Pompeii. She is a symbol of female strength whose image goes beyond the narrow confines of femininity as she is the goddess of noxious gasses, emitting sulphuric fumes from her stomach.
Lazarus Chan:
‘Poplar Yuddha’ is the latest of Lazarus Chan’s audiovisual works exploring the sonification of the end of the world. In this piece he researches infrasound visualization with an installation and sound capture device, exhibiting the midnight of Doomsday Clock and anxiety of apocalypse.
Infrasound refers to sound below 20hz, it contains an excellent transmission ability and is used in cinema as the sound of horrors. In reality, we use infrasound to monitor earthquakes, volcanoes, and to detect and locate nuclear explosions.
