Kathy Hinde is an audiovisual artist whose practice embraces open methods and evolving processes to nurture a more embodied connection to other species and the earth’s systems. Composed of hand-made objects, electronics and a blend of digital and analogue systems, Kathy’s work represents a cross between kinetic sound sculptures and newly invented instruments. She frequently works in collaboration with other practitioners and scientists and often actively involves the audience in the creative process.
During her residency at iii, Kathy will be working on her year long research project titled ‘improvising with the more-than-human world’ through which she aims to develop new instruments and methods for sound improvisation inspired by, in response to and in conversation with other species.
Kathy will be focusing on her fascination with how bees are attracted to electrical field signals emitted by flowers alongside the mysterious magnetic sense birds and other species possess.
These explorations into animal behaviour and sensing will inform her instrument creation and composition leading towards a new performance-installation that aims to foster empathy with the more than-human world by responding to the delicate and nuanced sensory experiences of the diverse species we share the planet with.
Kathy’s project ‘improvising with the more-than-human world’ is supported by Arts Council England.
