Automatic Means of Human Labour by Hugo Morales Murguia is a sounded reflection on the future of human labour and unemployment within a growing system of automation.
In this piece, two performers become the metaphor for mass production within these automated processes. Modified and hacked machines – from electrical equipment to sex toys -, become prosthetic extensions of the performers’ bodies, and allow them to generate complex rhythms and mechanical patterns through repetitive tasks and futile actions. But the performers should beware: however impressive the creation of these complex rhythms through the use of mechanical instruments may be, they also need utmost precision and speed to keep up with the unrelenting tempo of these motorized systems.
